How to Shred Chicken Fast: 4 Methods Compared

Shredded chicken is the base of a lot of easy dinners: tacos, enchiladas, sandwiches, soups and grain bowls. Pulling it apart is the slow part. Here are four ways to do it, from the one everyone knows to the fastest.

Before you start: cook it until it's tender

Every method works better on chicken that's cooked through and tender. Boneless thighs shred more easily than breasts and stay juicier. Poach, slow-cook, pressure-cook or roast the chicken until it reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part, the safe minimum temperature for poultry.

Let it rest for 5–10 minutes. Warm chicken shreds far more easily than cold chicken, but it should be cool enough to handle.

1. Two forks

Hold the piece steady with one fork and drag the other fork through it along the grain. It needs no special equipment, but it's slow: expect a few minutes per breast. Your wrists feel it if you're shredding a big batch.

Best for: one or two pieces.

2. Your hands

Once the chicken is cool enough, pull it apart with your fingers. You can feel and remove any gristle as you go, and you control the size of the shreds. It's messy, though, and it only works once the meat has cooled, when it's harder to shred.

Best for: chicken salad, where you want bigger, even pieces.

3. A stand or hand mixer

Put the warm chicken in the bowl and run the mixer on low for 15–30 seconds. It's fast for big batches. Watch it closely, because it turns chicken into mush in a few extra seconds, and it leaves a mixer bowl and beaters to wash.

Best for: large batches for meal prep or a crowd.

4. A chicken shredder bowl

A shredder bowl has spikes on the inside of the base and lid. Put the cooked chicken in, close the lid and twist the handles back and forth. The spikes pull the meat apart from both sides. A clear lid lets you stop when the texture is right, coarse for sandwiches or fine for tacos.

It's as fast as a mixer, with no noise and no flying chicken. The bowl is also easy to rinse.

Best for: anyone who makes shredded chicken every week.

Method Speed Mess Texture control
Two forks Slow Low Good
Hands Slow High Best
Mixer Fast Medium Easy to overdo
Shredder bowl Fast Low Good

Storing shredded chicken

Refrigerate shredded chicken within 2 hours of cooking. It keeps for 3–4 days in the fridge in a sealed container. To freeze it, portion it into containers or freezer bags with a splash of the cooking liquid so it doesn't dry out, and use it within about 4 months for the best quality. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

Our Chicken Shredder Bowl handles cooked chicken, pork and beef. Our Collapsible Meal Prep Containers fold flat when you're not using them.
